Historian & Thistle Times Editor-- Steve Nichols

Steve grew up in Richmond Heights, MO, and graduated from Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School in 1965.  He then went to Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1969, and then on to medical school at Washington University.  Steve did a four year residency in pathology at Jewish Hospital.

His first position was at St Anthony’s Medical Center, but was recruited to be the laboratory director at Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville, IN in 1979.  He practiced there for 20 years until the hospital was sold.  Steve returned to St Louis, and was fortunate to rejoin the pathology group at St Anthony’s where he practiced until retiring in January of 2007.

Steve has been married to Elizabeth (Sekulovich) Nichols for 38 years (in June).  They have two children Julie and Steven, both living in St Louis.  Julie is married to Tim O’Neal; who gave them their first grandchild, Elizabeth Jeanne.  Son Steven in an art director in advertising.

Steve's wife has a small antique business, focusing on true early American things, which Steve “manages”, meaning he keeps track of inventory, sales, etc on Quick Books.  They travel to New England to buy for Elizabeth Nichols Antiques.

This past year Steve began putting together the family genealogy.  Working first on the Nichols, he has traced a continuous Patrilineage to his fifth great grandfather John Nichols, born in Virginia in 1698.  Before him, but not yet documented, was a Samuel MacNicol.  The Nichols name in Scottish clan guides typically points to the Clan MacLeod of Lewis.  Hence the “loud” MacLeod tartan of his kilt.  Steve is also a member of Clan Macleod that had its annual gathering last June in St Louis.
